Walking for Karen, Mama, Bubbe
My mother was diagnosed with ALS in November of 2020, amid national upheaval. It was the scariest moment of my life, but we hit the ground running. I read all the research and information I could from organizations like the National Institute of Health and national and local ALS organizations.
The next two years were the hardest I have ever lived. My mother lived the best life she could, and so much of that was because of ALS United-Greater New York. They provided her with wheelchairs, ramps, tools, rides to doctor's appointments, mental health support, and so much beyond that.
My mother was my best friend, my confidant, the most important person in my life. She was a sister, a mother, a grandmother, a best friend, a mother-figure to all my my and my brothers' friends. She was inimitable, a force for good, dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of anyone she came into contact with - even the strangers on the train or people looking for mom hugs at NY Pride.
Her short struggle with ALS would have been impossible if it wasn't for the ALS Association. They provided so much in so many ways, and I can never repay them fully. Please donate so that they can continue to help others the way they helped my mother, and one day no one will ever have to suffer from this disease anymore.
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I'm participating in ALS United Greater New York’s Walk ALS to raise funds that will support individuals and families affected by ALS.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone regardless of age, gender, nationality, or ethnicity, although it is primarily an adult-onset disease. Currently there is no known cause or cure.
Being a part of ALS United Greater New York’s WALK ALS is the number one way to unite and fundraise for those living with ALS. Please consider supporting my efforts by donating through my fundraising page.
Your donation today will help fund resources and services to the local ALS community, help find new ALS treatments, and move us closer to a world without the disease.
Please feel free to send this page to any friend or family member who might be interested in donating!
Thank you.
