Team Mindy

Welcome to our team page!

We are participating in ALS United Greater New York’s Walk ALS to raise funds to support people in our local community with ALS and spread awareness.

Please consider joining our team in the Walk ALS or choose a team member from the list and donate to our cause.

My wife, Mindy and I were shocked with a diagnosis of ALS in June 2019. This explained the symptoms she had experienced since September the previous year. We were thankful to finally get a diagnosis after visiting many specialists and having many tests done.  We needed to change our retirement plans and take steps to learn more about the disease and what we could do to help Mindy. We learned as much as we could about ALS, joined an ALS support group, and began a journey to make every day a quality day and a joyful day for Mindy. Craig’s main goals for Mindy were to provide a safe and comfortable environment for her and as close to a normal life that her ALS would allow.  ALS United of Greater NY stood with us during our whole ALS journey and was invaluable in so many ways.  They provided information about ALS and what to expect, guidance about changes to our home that were necessary, suggestions and counseling about the equipment we would need for Mindy, loan us some of that necessary equipment at a moment's notice, and provide education and support through monthly support group meetings.  Our faith in God and His son, Jesus sustained us through the challenges that each day brought.  .

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. Especially frustrating to Mindy was the loss of her ability to knit and to read a book on her own.  It baffled me that there were no effective medications or cure for this disease. In fact, ALS’s cause is not known at a molecular level that would allow preventive measures and medications to be developed.

These are the reasons why I am walking in the ALS Jersey Shore Walk on Saturday, September 14 along the Promenade in Long Branch NJ.  I have also started to volunteer with ALS United by assisting at the NJ Walks in Saddle River and Long Branch.  These actions along with the actions of many others will change the statistics and  bring help and hope to those living with the disease. This walk ensures that there is a caring, loving organization like ALS United of Greater NY to stand together with  families affected by an ALS diagnosis of a loved one.

The past three years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.

Please consider walking with me or sponsoring me. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by Lou Gehrig's disease.  Thank you so very much and have a great day!

Warmly, Craig
