I NEED YOUR HELP!
I am running the NYC Half Marathon on March 15th with TEAM ALS in honor of my husband Roger and for ALL people and their families living with ALS. I have committed to raising $2500 and need help reaching this goal!
Roger was diagnosed with ALS in 2009, just a couple of months before our second daughter, Sarah, was born. ALS has an average life span of 2-5 years. Roger has lived with ALS for 17 years now and through our children’s entire childhoods. We have watched ALS slowly take away his ability to walk, use his hands, breathe on his own and now his struggle to communicate at all is a daily struggle. Despite the hell this has caused for him, not one day has gone by that Roger has not smiled. He has maintained his intelligence, his listening ears and his will to fight which is nothing short of extraordinary. He holds on in hope that he may live long enough to see a cure for this awful disease. Every penny donated goes towards helping people like him, their loved ones and families like ours.
I have been an avid runner for 13 years, including 18 half marathons and 6 full marathons. Running is my outlet and my absolute favorite thing! Sarah at age 16 along with Rogers home care nurse, Jen, will both be running this race as their very first half marathons. I’m excited to join them at the start line as a member of TEAM ALS. I KNOW these donations and those helping Roger to fight this cause will for sure bring a smile to his face.
THANK YOU!
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It primarily targets motor neurons, which control voluntary muscle movements like walking, talking, and breathing. Presently, there is no known cure for ALS.
Your donation will help support our local community of over 1,000 people with ALS and their families across the Greater New York area, through comprehensive care services, advocating for their needs, and funding cutting-edge research advancements.
- Every ninety minutes, someone is diagnosed with the disease, and someone passes away from it.
- 90% of ALS cases occur without any known family history or genetic cause. The remaining 10% of ALS cases are inherited through a mutated gene with a known connection to the disease.
- 55 is the average age of onset with most people who develop ALS between the ages of 40 and 70. However, cases of the disease do occur in people in their twenties and thirties.
- ALS is 20% more common in men than women. However, with increasing age, the incidence of ALS is more equal between men and women.
- Military veterans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public for yet unknown reasons.
