As many of you know, my mom was diagnosed with ALS in early 2026 and fought a very hard battle against this devastating disease. Getting to a diagnosis was a very, very hard battle in itself.

As many of you may be shocked to know, she was diagnosed with ALS much later in life. I must say, so was she. We all were. I don’t think most of us realize how truly common this disease is and how utterly devastating it is on the individual and the family but most of all, on the individual.

I will try to spare you the heart wrenching details. In short, you lose your ability to do everything, all while your mind is still fully functioning. You witness, understand, and experience what is happening to you moment by moment.

Mom, you will be forever missed, and your love and joy will be forever felt.

ALS United was an integral part of helping us navigate what to do next and supporting us throughout this journey. We truly don’t know what we would have done without them.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone regardless of age, gender, nationality, or ethnicity, although it is primarily an adult-onset disease. Currently there is no known cause or cure.
