Walking for Chico and for a Cure

On September 26, I’ll be walking to raise money and awareness for ALS—for all the people and families whose lives have been changed by this devastating disease, and most especially for my brother-in-law, Chico Boyer.

Chico is a lifelong musician from Haiti who has called New York City home since his younger days. Music has always been at the heart of who he is. It has been his passion, his language, and one of the ways he connects with the people around him.

ALS has taken away Chico’s ability to make music, but it has not taken away his love for it—or his ability to share that love with others.

And right there beside him is his incredible wife, Kathy Boyer. Kathy has created a beautiful way for Chico to continue being surrounded by the people and music he loves. She helps organize music in their yard, welcomes friends and family, and makes sure there are always visits, stories, laughter, and music filling their home. She has been an amazing source of love and strength for Chico, and for all of us who are lucky enough to be part of their lives.

Friends and family come from near and far to spend time with Chico—to share stories, remember old times, laugh together, and, most importantly, share in the music they have loved and created together over the years. These gatherings are a beautiful reminder that while ALS can take so much, it cannot take away love, memories, friendship, or the spirit of the people who surround him.

I’m asking you to please support my walk with a donation of any size. Every contribution helps fund research toward treatments and, ultimately, a cure for this vicious disease.
