Running for Ron
My dad, Ron Russo, spent 35 years as a championship-winning cross country coach. He taught thousands of athletes how to find their motivation and push through the pain.
For the last three years, the roles reversed. I became his coach, and he became my inspiration.
In 2023, my dad was diagnosed with ALS. Watching a man who lived to run slowly lose his ability to move was the hardest race we ever ran. As his son and caregiver, I saw firsthand the physical and emotional toll of this disease, but I also saw his relentless spirit and contagious laughter, even on the toughest days.
We didn't run that race alone. ALS United was there for us every step of the way, providing the vital support, equipment, and community that allowed my dad to live with dignity and peace until he passed away on February 10, 2026.
Every year, my dad and I shared a tradition of traveling to New York City to catch a sporting event. Whether we were at Yankee Stadium or a legendary arena, those trips were the highlights of our year. This November, I’m returning to the city we loved.
I’m running with Team ALS to give back to the organization that carried us through the last three years and to fund the research that will one day stop this disease from taking another father, coach, or friend.
Please consider donating to help me honor my dad’s legacy. Every mile I run in NYC is a tribute to the man who taught me that the finish line is only the beginning.
