WHY LES WALKS
As some of our walk signs read …. “I walk because I can.” After my third friend lost his battle to this horrific disease in 2009 it was nothing less than “a calling” to do something … sitting back was not an option. If I was going to walk, in the words of Josh Groban and others, I would never walk alone. In 2009, fifteen Hudson Valley walks ago, 55 of us, “The Band of 55”, Notre Dame club members walked for the first time. We were the first not-for-profit organization to hold a fundraising walk on the magnificent Walkway Over the Hudson. We’ve walked every year since including the Covid years.
I walk because I am inspired by the words of Sir Francis Drake when he prayed… “Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves. When our dreams have come true because we have dreamed too little. When we have arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore.” But most of all, I walk because of the inspiration I receive from the words spoken in 2014 on the Walkway by the late Kevin Trotta… “This may look like a Lou Gehrig Woodstock… a walk in the park…. A big party …. But it’s a WAR, it’s an Army crossing the Walkway. We have a common enemy, and we are at war and we are not going to stop until we beat this thing!”
